The 5 Minute Face

Hello everyone! Hope you're all having a great day. I'm currently home sick with an upset stomach so I thought I'd try to get a blog post out. I've been meaning to write this one for a while now, but I've been hit hard with writers block. I'm blaming winter. I'm also blaming the fact that I've barely bought any makeup all year. It's just so much easier to feel inspired when surrounded by new things. But that's okay. I'm getting past that.

So on to the point of this post. I'm sure we've all been in situations where we only have five or ten minutes to be out the door, and unfortunately a completely bare face isn't always an option. I feel like I've really mastered that very-minimal-but-still-put-together thing, so I thought I'd share my routine for you. When last minute plans pop up, I tend to go for a very minimal look. It suits me better to have everything done minimally than to just focus on one area of my face.

For starters, try to use a sunscreen that works well under makeup. When I'm short on time I don't have the luxury to prep my skin the way I would on a normal day. There isn't time to apply moisturiser, sunscreen and primer and let them all sink in. Considering I'm much more of a day person than a night person, these plans will almost always involve sun exposure. I've raved about the To Save Face Superscreen SPF 50+ from Mecca Cosmetica over and over again. But there's a reason. It's hydrating, but not greasy, ever. It doesn't smell or cause break outs. And it makes such a good primer. This is always my first step if I'm going out during the day.

For choosing a base, stick with what you know works for you. There are plenty of foundations I love, but they don't look great on my skin every time I apply them. Diet, hormones and sleep all come into play. The It Cosmetics CC Cream works for me no matter what my skin is doing. I have dry skin, so I can't just slap on a matte product and have it look good. The dewy finish keeps me looking healthy and there's enough coverage so that I can pass on concealer if I'm in a real rush.

Because I usually stick to a dewy base product, I can easily skip highlighting. But I'll still almost always reach for bronzer and/or blush. Just to add a little more liveliness and dimension back to my skin. I've been in love with the Milk Makeup Matte Bronzer in Baked since I got it. This thing has so much product in it that I will never come close to finishing it. I'll swipe this wherever I want it and blend over it with whatever sponge I use for my foundation. I'll do the same for blush. Lately I've been reaching for the Stila Convertible Colour in Peony and the Youngblood Luminous Creme Blush in Tropical Glow. Unlike powder blushes, I find cream ones almost impossible to over-apply, so I don't need to be too careful.

As for the eyes, I keep them bare aside from a coat of mascara. I like the Lights, Camera, Lashes by Tarte for a defined but not intense appearance. I'm blessed to have brows that are naturally... okay. They aren't incredible, but I can get them to look acceptable with just a bit of gel. If I don't want any extra colour, I'll use the Clear Brow Gel by ABH. The Essence Make Me Brow is another one that I reach for often. It has a bit of colour to it if you're looking for a bit more oomph.

I'm pretty basic when it comes to lip products, so it's no surprise that a good lip balm is what I reach for. If I'm running out the door I want something that can be applied without having to look in the mirror. I find a good balm can really tie together a no-makeup-makeup look.

How do you do your makeup when you're pressed for time? Or do you just forego it all together? I'm comfortable leaving the house with a bare face, so a lot of the time I'll just not worry about it. But there are definitely days where I want a little something to bring my face to life.

  1. I tend to keep things fairly natural looking on most days but a blusher, foundation, powder, mascara and lipstick are a must. Oh and brows too! Hope you feel better soon.
