Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Volume 3 Review and Swatches

I finally caved. The last two holiday seasons I told myself I didn't need the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edits. I listened to myself when I said I already owned a full size of a shade, or that I wouldn't get use out of every pan. And I was right. I didn't need Volume One or Two. But both years I found myself wishing I had picked them up anyway (especially Volume One). It's not often that I regret not picking up a product, so I was definitely keeping an eye out for their 2017 Holiday release.

The Ambient Lighting Edit Volume Three contains three existing and three new shades in a beautiful rose gold compact. You get two Ambient Lighting Powders, an Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder, two Ambient Lighting Blushes and an Ambient Lighting Bronzer. There is good variety within this palette, but I definitely think that it is best suited for fair-tan skin. I would love to see them release one with deeper shades because these are definitely not universal.

The two Ambient Lighting Powders, Diffused Light and Dim Light are existing shades within the ALP line. I was really excited to see Diffused Light included as I'd been considering picking up the full-size for a while now. It's a bright pale shade with a yellow undertone and suits my skin (NC10) perfectly. You can barely see it in my swatches because it's basically an exact match for me. Dim Light is darker with a peachier undertone, This shade works as a subtle blush on me, and would be a lovely setting powder for those with light-tan skin. The ALPs are known for being incredible setting powders, and if you're after a soft radiant finish, I'm sure you'll love them.

Hypnotic Strobe Light is a soft gold highlighting shade. It does have glitter in it, but they are quite small so they don't bother me. I find that they are barely visible after blending. It gives a pretty sheen to the skin without emphasising texture, so I can see myself reaching for this all the time.

Another permanent shade in Hourglass' line-up is Luminous Bronze Light. It's a warm, luminous (duh) bronzer and just looking at it makes me think of summer. One layer is enough for a subtle flush while two is enough to make me look sunkissed. The tone of the bronzer looks very natural on me, but it's definitely too warm for me to contour with.

After Diffused Light, I was most excited to try the two new blushes. I have two of their single blushes in my collection and they are both gorgeous, so I couldn't wait to have two new additions. Surreal Halo is a warm toned berry shade. It has a slight golden shimmer to it. Because the formula is so soft, you do need to use a light hand. The same goes for Pure Effect, which is a brighter pink with a satin finish. A little goes a long way with these blushes, which can be tricky at first if you aren't used to pigmented blush.

Value is always a talking point with these palettes, as you get quite a small amount compared to how much you pay. It's a big reason I didn't get the first Ambient Lighting Edit, but considering how rare it is for me to actually finish a powder product, I don't mind not getting a huge amount. Along with the fact that you don't need a lot of product, I feel like this palette will still last me a long time.

I think this is a gorgeous palette, and definitely worth grabbing if the shades appeal to you. It will make a nice travel companion, look good on your vanity and make your face look great. If you're looking to treat yourself or a beauty lover in your life, this is a great option and totally worth the splurge.
