Shopping Your Stash: How To Make The Most Of Your Makeup Collection

I have too much makeup. Well, maybe not too much... but certainly more than I need. I think considering I blog about makeup my collection is reasonable, but still far more than I will ever finish up. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to that, with so many new releases and beauty gurus saying that we need everything.

For a while I found myself only using what was new in my collection. If I picked up a new blush I would use it until I got a newer blush. It all changed when I started shopping my stash. Instead of ignoring older products or only reaching for my Holy Grail products, I started sharing the love. Now I can honestly say that I get good use out of the vast majority of my products, which I never did before.

So what is shopping your stash? It's looking through your collection and adding different items into your routine. You might have a primer you forgot about, or a lipstick you haven't used in a while, so you start incorporating it back into rotation. It's a really great way to get use out of products you've spent money on.

The reason I started shopping my stash was to make getting ready in the morning a little bit easier. I wake up at 5:30am to get ready for work and leave home by 6:30, so I try to save all the time I can. On a Sunday night I will go through and pick everything I need for a full face. That way, every morning I can just get right into it. No need to open drawers and figure out which highlight will compliment my eyeshadow because it's already done.

Once I realised what a great way this is to get use out of your products, I got a little more structured. I wrote a list of all my eyeshadow palettes and rotate one per week. Using the palette as my starting point, I select items based on how they work with the shades in there. If it's a warm toned palette, I will choose a warm toned blush. If it's a cool toned palette, I will pick a cooler lip colour.

Doing this has not only helped me get use out of once ignored products, but it's helped me see what products I actually enjoy using. If after using a bronzer for a week straight and not really liking it, I will declutter it. I've realised that I have enough makeup that I don't need to keep anything that doesn't make me happy. Most recently, I did this with the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation. I picked it up after hearing great reviews and used it for a week. I realised that it was too heavy for my skin. To give it a fair chance, I tried it with with different primers. I tried setting it, not setting it. It just looked cakey on me, no matter what I did. I've done the same with mascaras, primers and blush too.

Shopping my stash has also helped lessen the 'need' to buy every new product that comes out. Because I regularly use everything I own, I'm know when I already have something similar. I used to see new products coming out and get it immediately, not realising that there was a dupe for it sitting in a drawer I hadn't looked in for a while. Don't get me wrong, I still end up buying the same shades of lipsticks, but not as often.

I really do think shopping your stash is a great way to use your makeup. It's definitely not for everyone, I know plenty of people would get so bored and feel restricted by it! But for those of us that tend to feel a little guilty about having products go unused, it's a good way to curb that feeling.

Thank you so much for reading!

  1. Such a useful post! Buying everything that comes out is such an expensive hobby so I've been trying to do the same :) What I do is that I invest in nicer things I really want so I don't have an excuse to go and buy another dupe :) So far so good!

    1. That's so smart! No point buying a tonne of dupes for a product if you won't be satisfied unless you have the real thing.

  6. This is some really great advice! I've kind of done this but only through putting myself on a makeup buying ban where I'm only allowed to 'replace' ... so I can replace my mascara or whatever I fully run out of! It's also meant I have been using up some travel size products that have just been sat there for ages! I don't know why I keep them....I don't travel that often yet have enough travel bits to travel non stop!!! :P :P Great post xx

    1. I've been debating putting myself on a ban for a while, luckily just thinking about it has really slowed down how much I buy!

  7. Great post! I definitely have way more makeup than I'll ever use so I've been trying to shop my stash more often instead of buying new products. I love how you take notes on the products, I think that's something I should definitely do to help keep track!
